I love traditions. I love hymns. In the past I have sometimes had friends over to celebrate a Jewish Seder dinner. Last year, I attempted to go to my first Ash Wednesday service (but someone little melted down loudly!) Most years I want to celebrate Lent- even though it was not a tradition I grew up with. I love the beauty of preparing my heart for Easter, waiting for the Messiah and remembering my need for a Savior. I don't like doing things that I feel are "have to's", but every year I am drawn in to this season. Some year's I have tried to "give up" something...but most year's I have tried to "add in" something-- whatever will best help me to refocus my heart on God. So, this year, I have decided to "add in" worship. I want to worship the Lord in Spirit and in Truth. Every day, I want to set aside 5 minutes to quiet my mind, and my hands and my mouth...and worship. (I don't think this means singing every day-- or any of the days-- but it means surrendering my heart again to the Lord!)
I asked my family what Ash Wednesday means and what the verse above means and this is what they answered:
A: God is always with you, no matter what.
L: God is greater than EVERYthing!
R: Life is short, make the most of it!
So, then I asked, what does Lent mean...only Hunnie had an answer for that:
R: A time of hungering for Christ.
Isn't that a beautiful answer?
We have 40 days between Ash Wednesday and Easter. Time I want to spend hungering for God. Not for comfort, not for my wishes to come true, not for more sleep or better health. Just for HIM. That is the heart of worship.
Then, I asked, what does Easter mean?
A: A time of joy and a time to teach people how great God is and how He died and rose again. (She wants to get baptised this year- she's ready!)
L: A time we are made new.
R: Celebrating the resurrection
I hope this Lenten season is a time of worship, joy, being made new and great celebration for you as well!
